Calendar of Events
Membership
Membership is open to all judges and apprentices approved by NZPF and on their register (full membership of PJNZ) and to associate PJNZ members and others interested (particularly exhibitors).
Club activities and services
Newsletter
A newsletter, Forum, is published three times a year to keep members informed about judging matters within NZ and internationally and to provide a forum for discussion.
In addition, at regular intervals, information is circulated to members from the PJNZ’s NZPF liaison officer with news relating to judging and exhibiting in NZ and internationally.
Judging Seminars/Workshops
At regular intervals PJNZ runs judging workshops. These are an essential means by which judges maintain their skills and knowledge. Some workshops will not be exclusively for judges. Associate members and exhibitors who wish to understand more of the judging process may (depending on the agenda) be welcome.
As well as teaching the discipline of judging, the workshops for judges include other skills, such as the ability to complete meaningful and justifiable marking sheets and the ability to explain the results to an exhibitor ‘at the frame’.
PJNZ business meetings
PJNZ, as with all incorporated societies, must hold Annual General Meetings (usually April each year), and may hold Special General Meetings (as required). These may be conducted electronically. They may range from matters circulated by email requiring email responses from members by a specified time, to in-person or video conferencing where the matters require real-time discussion among members of the issues. Full and timely notification to members will be given.
Other PJNZ meetings
National Exhibitions generally see a gathering of members in the jury team but also members who are visitors to the exhibition. Often, PJNZ will have an informal meeting at these events. It is common for these to also include any visiting judges (perhaps involved in the jury at the exhibition) from other countries. This process ensures our members reconnect with judging colleagues and share experiences and knowledge of judging.
Judging
PJNZ full members are encouraged to participate in a range of judging opportunities such as:
- society competitions – individual club competitions and inter-club competitions, which can range from two competing societies to the NZ Interclub which can have over ten clubs competing; and
- workshops for exhibitors where knowledge of judging rules is given and exhibiting skills demonstrated.
The path of judging progress for judges, with support from PJNZ and their fellow judges, is:
- National apprenticeships. Typically, a judge entering this area for the first time is expected to judge at two national exhibitions as an apprentice where their performance is guided and ultimately assessed by senior judges to ensure they meet the standards required. Satisfactory outcomes leads to approval as National Judges and entry to the NZPF register.
- National judges. The pool of national judges is often more in number than needed for any single national exhibition. The jury for any exhibition, is selected by the Jury Chairman based on jurors’ experience and specialist knowledge given the number and class of entries at the exhibition. The Jury Chairman considers a wide range of attributes among the judges available but, significantly, must also consider the need to ensure every judge on the register is given opportunities to judge at regular intervals.
New Zealand has several ‘accords’ with other similar bodies overseas, particularly the Australian Philatelic Federation (APF). NZ is invited to nominate at least one judge to each Australian National exhibition. Such nominations will normally be for any fully qualified NZ national judge who has completed their apprenticeship and who has judged at one national exhibition subsequently.
- Jury team leadership. As judges develop experience, opportunities arise for them to become team leaders (responsible for one of more classes of exhibits and for mentoring and assessing apprentices).
- International judging. Is arguably the pinnacle of philatelic judging and a full explanation lies outside the scope of this coverage. However, if you would seriously like to consider such a goal, please feel free to contact any of NZ’s existing international judges who will be able to provide an outline of the processes involved.
