New Zealand / New Zealand Post / Universal Postal Union and Philately…

New Zealand is a member country of the United Nations specialised agency, the Universal Postal Union (UPU). New Zealand Post is the designated operator for New Zealand and represents our country at the UPU.

The UPU fulfils an advisory, mediating and liaison role, and provides technical assistance where needed. It sets the rules for international mail exchanges and makes recommendations to stimulate growth in mail, parcel and financial services volumes and improve quality of service for customers.

An important body within the UPU is the World Association for the Development of Philately (WADP), of which New Zealand is a member. The principal aim of the WADP is to develop and promote philately through continuous and positive dialogue between partners in the philatelic sector and designated operators. Its objectives are to:
• Maintain collaboration and development between the UPU, designated operators, philatelic partners and the industry;
• Monitor market trends and issues that will have an impact on the philatelic business;
• Analyse and disseminate information relating to the sector;
• Improve knowledge of philatelic markets among designated operators;
• Encourage and facilitate the adoption of best practices.

New Zealand Post also participates in the WAPD Numbering System (WNS) (WNS Stamps Search)
The WNS is a register of all official postage stamps issued by its members created in 2002 by the UPU, the WADP and its partners. It is the only system that provides collectors with a guarantee that a given stamp is official.
